Feelings of gratitude are actually essential to mental health. Studies have found that expressing gratitude stimulates the hypothalamus, which is the area of the brain that regulates stress. Additionally, feelings of gratitude also affect the ventral tegmentum, which is the part of the brain that regulates feelings of pleasure. To stimulate these processes, simply list the reasons you feel grateful each day, or take an opportunity to thank co-workers for the work they do.

Define What Success Means to You

When you work just to work, you’ll find that it’s harder to motivate yourself. Instead, set attainable goals for yourself, so you can experience success on a regular basis. As you reach a goal, find some way to celebrate, or reward yourself.

Don’t Fear Failure

It’s important to accept that you are going to fail from time to time. It’s equally vital that you don’t let these failures cloud your perspective. Instead of feeling guilt over the failure, use these experiences as opportunities to learn and grow. Every failure can be used to help you refine your work process, so the risks of similar failures in the future will be minimized. It’s only a failure if it’s the end of the road. However, you should continue on and view it as an obstacle/speed bump on the road to success.

Keeping a positive mindset is easy when things are going well. However, remaining positive in the face of adversity is much more challenging. If you can find ways to bounce back more quickly from disappointments, you’ll find that you can be more productive and that can help you reach your goals more quickly.
